About Me

It’s a common phrase, but in my case, it’s true: I have been writing since I could hold a pencil. Even when paper and pencil were out of reach, my mind stayed busy, spinning tales of heroes, heroines, and imagined distant lands. I often found myself drawn to the anti-hero, who somehow managed to take the spotlight in my stories.

Though I never published those early stories, the process helped me develop beautiful penmanship and a love for creating characters and settings. Everything changed in 7th grade when Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” became required reading. The adventures of Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, the mysterious Skeleton Island, and the Hispaniola fascinated me. I realized then just how powerful simple words could be in transporting readers to other worlds, and I knew I wanted to become a writer.

My career has taken me through the corporate world, the broadcast news industry, and even led me to found and manage a small-town newspaper. That newspaper thrived for thirteen years, reaching a circulation of 10,000 readers.

From my early days as a seventh grader to now, I have become an award-winning, best-selling author of mystery, suspense, crime novels, and true crime.

I grew up, and still live, in the heart of North Carolina. Three hours from the ocean; and two hours from the mountains. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

So far, my writing career has taken me to NYC multiple times, the D.C. area, Nashville multiple times, Atlanta and other parts of Georgia, Birmingham, Virginia, and South Carolina. I love visitng, making new friends and meeting readers. But I love coming home.

I’ve had the honor over the last four years to serve as the President of the Southeast Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America, aka SEMWA, and as a member of the National Board of Directors. The position allowed me the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in the business. See the photos below–major fan girl moments! I mean, seriously. William Kent Krueger. Ordinary Grace is my favorite book of all time.
